FAQ

Using Our Pigments

What does Chemix Colors specialize in?

Chemix Colors provides non‑toxic, high‑performance pigments, including metallic and pearlescent pigments, designed for epoxy resins, coatings, candles, soap products, and creative applications. Our coatings‑industry background ensures every pigment meets strict standards for clarity, stability, and dispersion.

Are your pigments non-toxic?

Yes. Our pigments are non‑toxic and free from intentionally added heavy metals based on supplier specifications.

Safety notes:

  • Avoid inhaling airborne powder.
  • Keep away from food preparation surfaces.
  • Wash hands after handling.
  • Store safely away from children and pets.

SDS sheets are available upon request.

What can I use Chemix Colors pigments in?

Our pigments work well in:

  • Epoxy resins and art resin systems
  • Solvent-based surface coatings
  • Candle wax and wax melts
  • Soap products
  • Decorative, DIY, and craft applications

If you’re unsure whether a pigment fits your project, contact us.

How much pigment should I use?

Suggested starting points:

  • Epoxy: ~1–5% pigment by weight
  • Candle Wax: ~0.1–0.5% by weight
  • Soap: Add gradually until the desired color is achieved

Always run small test batches before scaling up.

How should I mix pigments properly?

For Coatings

  • If using a solvent, first wet the pigment with a small amount of solvent to fully moisten the powder.
  • Pre-mix the pigment (or wetted pigment) with a small amount of resin or clear coat to form a smooth, lump-free paste.
  • Gradually add the remaining resin or clear coat while mixing thoroughly until a uniform mixture is obtained.
  • Scrape the sides and bottom of the container during mixing to ensure proper dispersion.

For Wax

  • Melt the wax completely and allow it to reach the recommended mixing temperature.
  • Pre-mix the pigment with a small amount of melted wax to form a smooth paste.
  • Add the pigment paste to the full melted wax while stirring continuously until evenly dispersed.
  • Scrape the sides and bottom of the container to ensure consistent color throughout.
Can I blend different pigments together?

Yes. To achieve smooth, consistent blends:

  • Mix pigments from the same system (all mica, all oxide, etc.).
  • Blend pigments with similar particle sizes for even color distribution.
  • Keep notes on ratios to reproduce successful colors.
Are your pigments compatible with all epoxy resins?

Yes. Our pigments blend easily into most resin systems used for art, casting, and coatings.

For specialty resins (fast-cure, high-temperature, or unusual formulations) and water-based resins, please contact us with details so we can confirm compatibility.

Troubleshooting

My pigment isn’t dispersing evenly. What should I do?
  • If using a solvent, first wet the pigment with a small amount of solvent to fully moisten the powder.
  • Pre-mix the pigment (or wetted pigment) with a small amount of resin or clear coat to form a smooth, lump-free paste.
  • Gradually add the remaining resin or clear coat while mixing thoroughly until a uniform mixture is obtained.
  • Scrape the sides and bottom of the container during mixing to ensure proper dispersion.
The color looks lighter or darker than expected. Why?

Common reasons:

  • Too little or too much pigment
  • Base transparency or color
  • Particle size differences
  • Temperature or curing conditions

Adjust gradually and test small batches to find your ideal loading.

The pigment settled at the bottom. How can I avoid this?
  • Stir again just before pouring
  • Increase viscosity if possible
  • Let your mix rest briefly before use
  • Use finer particles for better suspension
My epoxy looks streaky or cloudy. How can I fix it?

Try the following:

  • Increase mixing time
  • Confirm accurate resin–hardener ratio
  • Work at recommended room temperature
  • Ensure pigments used have similar particle sizes

Cloudiness after curing can be due to moisture or cold conditions.

My candle wax shows small dots or uneven color. Why?

Likely causes:

  • Adding pigment when wax is too cool
  • Incomplete mixing

Solutions:

  • Add pigment only when wax is fully melted
  • Pre‑mix pigment with a small amount of hot wax
  • Stir thoroughly and consistently
My soap color faded after curing. How can I prevent this?
  • Use pigments stable in high‑pH conditions
  • Avoid excessive heat during soap making
  • Store finished products away from direct sunlight
